Area athletes shine at 3-Class Shootout

SALEM – The Class A Boys and the Class AA Girls won titles during the 37th Annual 3-Class Shootout basketball event Saturday in Salem.

Castlewood’s Bryon Laue was selected the Class B Boys’ Most Valuable Player and also won the dunk contest.

Ava Hanson of Aberdeen Roncalli, and Sisseton’s Krista Langager each scored in double figures for the Class A Girls in their game.

Here is a capsule look at each contest:

Class AA Girls 83, Class A Girls 79

The AA Girls edged Class A led by Grace Peterson of Sioux Falls Washington. The AA Spirit of Su winner had 15 points and nine rebounds, followed by Logan Smidt of Brookings with 14 points. Mya Kochuten of Spearfish contributed 13 points, three rebounds and three assists. O’Gorman’s Julie Eggert added nine points and six rebounds.

Sloane Keszler of St. Thomas More was chosen the Class A MVP following a 13-point, 3-rebound, and 6-assist performance. Langager finished with 11 points and six rebounds, Hanson contributed 10 points and three rebounds, and Cameryn Sommervold of Dakota Valley chipped in nine points and seven rebounds.

Class AA Girls 80, Class B Girls 79

The AA Girls clipped the Class B Girls in the title game. Kochuten topped the AA Girls with 19 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Taaliyah Porter of Rapid City Stevens followed with 14 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Peterson contributed 12 points and seven rebounds. Eggert finished with nine rebounds and six rebounds.

Kaylee Voelker of Colman-Egan led scorers with 23 points and four rebounds to top Class B. Centerville’s Emma Marshall contributed 21 points and six rebounds. Alexa Goetz of Sanborn Central-Woonsocket added 11 points, three rebounds, and three assists.

Class A Boys 131, Class AA Boys 128 2OT

Dakota Valley’s Logan Collette poured in a game-high 32 points and collected two rebounds as the Class A Boys outscored the Class AA Boys in double overtime. Benson Kieffer added 25 points to go along with four rebounds. Luke Bruns of Dakota Valley contributed 18 points and seven rebounds, while Julius Frog of Rapid City Christian finished with 11 points and five rebounds.

Tommy Hoffman of Sioux Falls Washington had 28 points and 12 rebounds on the way to winning MVP honors for Class A. Dayler Segrist of Rapid City Stevens added 22 points and three rebounds. Ryan Heinert of Sturgis contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Mitchell’s Gavin Hinker finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Class A Boys 122, Class B Boys 101

A quarter of players combined for 83 points as the Class A Boys defeated Class B 122-101. Collette finished with 26 points and two rebounds, Bruns followed with 22 points and four rebounds, Kieffer added 19 points and two rebounds, and Custer’s Kyle Virtue contributed 16 points and five rebounds.

Laue finished with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds to pace Class B. Trevon Beckman of Dell Rapids St. Mary contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Lemmon’s Blair Ham finished with 17 points and three rebounds.
