WATERTOWN – For the second straight day the Aberdeen Cougars outshot an opponent at the State Boys’ Hockey Tournament and for the second straight day it wasn’t enough.

The Cougars fell in their final game of the season 6-2 to the Mitchell Marlins in consolation round action at the Prairie View Ice Arena on Friday afternoon.

Like they did in a double overtime loss to Sioux Falls West on Thursday, the Cougars had a major shots on goal advantage against Mitchell, doubling up the Marlins 36-18. In the two setbacks during the state tournament Aberdeen outshot its foes by a combined margin of 84-50.

Mitchell got on the board in the opening minute when Parker Denne scored just 53 seconds into the contest. Denne would finish with a pair of goals and two assists on the afternoon.

Trailing 2-0, Aberdeen got on the board early in the second period when Micah Kranzler scored on assists from Jack Podoll and Carter Vilhauer. However the Marlins answered that goal for a 3-1 advantage going into the third period.

Mitchell then took total control with back-to-back goals from Lukas Jerke and Denne.

Aberdeen added one more goal when Devon Fischbach found the back of the net on an assist from Vilhauer, before the Marlins produced another goal for the final margin of difference.

In three games against Aberdeen this past season, Denne finished with eight goals and five assists.

Friday’s contest marked the final game for 15 Cougars seniors.

Mitchell will face Yankton for fifth place at 1 this afternoon.
