While most of the state’s top teams in Class B survived regional competition last week, things got a bit interesting. In theory, games will only get tougher as the postseason heads into SoDak 16 competition on Tuesday with winners qualifying for next week’s state tournament at Wachs Arena.

Here is a capsule look at each game involving area teams:

11 Aberdeen Christian (17-5) vs. 6 Lemmon (19-2), 6 p.m. (MDT), Faith

While Lemmon is the higher seed in this matchup, Aberdeen Christian should benefit from having play a tougher schedule, which included six Class A schools, two of which are in this week’s SoDak 16. The Knights went 9-1 in their last 10 games.

Lemmon had a 16-game winning streak during the middle of the season. The Cowboys are battle tested, going 4-0 in games decided the six points or less.

The two teams faced two common foes this season. Both defeated Timber Lake (Lemmon twice), and both defeated Herreid-Selby Area.

16 Ipswich (14-8) vs. 1 Castlewood (20-2), 5:30 p.m., Watertown

Castlewood will be the obvious favorite in this 1 vs. 16 seed matchup. The Warriors have been at or near the top of the Class B poll all season, and played a strong schedule that included three Class A foes that are playing in this week’s SoDak 16. The Chargers enter the game having won their last nine games.

Ipswich has rebounded from a slow start and appears to be playing its best basketball of the season. The Tigers, who began the season 3-5, also played a solid schedule, facing a trio of schools competing in this week’s Class B SoDak 16.

The two have one shared opponent, each pulling out narrow wins over Waubay-Summit.

15 Waverly-South Shore (14-8) vs. 2 Dell Rapids St. Mary (21-1), 5:15 p.m., Madison

Dell Rapids St. Mary has been among the elite squads in Class B all season long, its only setback coming against second-rated Castlewood. The Cardinals bring an 11-game winning streak into this contest.

Waverly-South Shore will not be intimated, despite being an underdog in this one. The Coyotes pulled off a key win at fifth-rated Leola-Frederick in their region semifinal and will be motivated to reach the state tourney after falling in the SoDak 16 last season.

The two teams shared three common foes during the regular season. Both defeated Flandreau, DRSM swept Elkton-Benton and Estelline-Hendricks, while Waverly-South Shore lost to both of those teams.

9 Sully Buttes (17-4) vs. 8 Wall (16-6), 6 p.m. (MDT), Philip

Both of these teams are full of athletes who had stellar football seasons, Sully Buttes winning the Class 9B state championship.

Sully Buttes lost just four games this season, three of them to Class A foes including two playing in this week’s SoDak 16. The Chargers have won 13 of their last 14 games.

Wall lost six games, that included a pair of three-game losing streaks. Half of those setbacks came against teams competing in the SoDak 16. The Eagles enter this contest having won eight in a row, its closest game being 14 points.

Both teams defeated Timber Lake during the regular season.
