NSU baseball, softball teams have busy Spring Break

Northern State softball and baseball hit the road for 21 games between the two programs over Spring Break.

Wolves Baseball went 2-7 from Tucson, Ariz., despite scoring 75 runs, averaging over eight runs per game. They opened their Tucson series with a 14-13 loss to Dakota Wesleyan, although the Wolves defeated them five days earlier in a doubleheader. Drew Benson went 3-for-6 with three RBIs and a home run, with Jack Weidner also driving in three on 2-for-6 at the plate.

The Wolves then had some Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action against Winona State in a four-game series. In game one, the Wolves lost 9-7 with Brendan Phillips leading the way offensively batting 2-for 4-with one RBI.

On day two, the Wolves lost 8-5 and 4-1 with Michael Benevides and Nick Ochoa both hitting home runs on the day. In the fourth game of the series, the Wolves lost 14-12. Ochoa and Phillips both put one over the fence, with Weidner going 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

The Wolves then took on Minot State in non-conference action in a 11-0 loss to the Beavers. Northern’s three hits on the day came from Dillon Castellanos, AJ Mendez and Benevides.

Lance Behrens recorded the first win for the Wolves in Tucson with an 11-8 win over Wesleyan University. Nick Friedges was the leading hitter going 3-for-4 while driving in a run.

On Saturday, the Wolves lost 16-13 to Carthage College, with Jordan Hull going 3-for-4 bringing in four runs. They then recorded their second win of the trip on the final day with a 13-3 win over Hamline University. Friedges went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three stolen bases. Braxton Kusler recorded the win with 10 strikeouts in five innings pitched.

Wolves softball hit the road for 12 games posing a 2-10 record. They kicked off their Spring Break with an 8-inning win over Northeastern State 4-3. Brooke Carlson drove in Grace Human for the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Abby Rux pitched a complete game with six strikeouts.

Following the extra-inning victory, the Wolves put away Cottey College with a 5-2 win. Aune Boben gained the win for the Wolves throwing all seven innings, while going 2-for-4 at the plate and driving in a pair. Dessa Bryant had a perfect day at the plate on four at-bats collecting three doubles, driving in a run and scoring once.

The Wolves followed that up with a 9-5 loss to Washburn, with Boben and Tevan Bryant both batting 2-for-4. The next game, the Wolves lost to 20th-ranked McKendree 13-5 in 6 innings. Boben finished the day with two doubles on three hits, with Addy Hobza bringing in two runs on one hit.

The next day, the Wolves traveled to Warrensburg to take on Central Missouri in a doubleheader. Both games ended in five innings by scores of 15-2 and 14-2. Madi Jones was responsible for the two runs in the first game, with Emma Owens and Dessa Bryant driving in two runs in the second game.

The Wolves then traveled to Pittsburg, Kan. to take on Pittsburg State in a doubleheader on Friday. Both games ended in five innings as they lost 15-1 and 14-1. Jones hit a solo home run in the first game, and Hobza brought in the only run in the second game.

NSU stayed in Pittsburg to take on Nebraska Kearney for two games. The Wolves dropped both 9-5 and 9-0 in five innings. Boben went a perfect 3-for-3 in game one with two RBIs. A trio of Wolves went 1-for-2 at the plate.

The Wolves finished up their road series in Joplin, Mo., taking on Missouri Southern. The Wolves lost game one 8-0 in six innings, with another 8-0 loss in game two, that one in five innings. Dessa Bryant had the lone two hits in game one, and Avarie Eagle accounted for the only hit in game two.

The Northern State track & field teams will do some traveling of their own down in Myrtle Beach, S.C. as they compete in the Alan Connie Shamrock Invite Thursday through Saturday.

The baseball team will look to bounce back in NSIC action traveling to Concordia-St. Paul for a four-game series, starting Friday with one game, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, and a single game on Sunday.

Wolves softball will host Minnesota State at Koehler Hall of Fame field (weather permitting) at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, followed by hosting Augustana on Sunday at Noon and 2 p.m. They will then compete in a midweek doubleheader taking on Minnesota State Moorhead on Wednesday March 26 at Noon and 2p.m., at Koehler Hall of Fame Field (weather permitting).
