BROOKINGS – Hamlin’s Zac VanMeeteren, and Milbank’s Sam Rick each won a pair of events, and Aberdeen Christian athletes made major strides during the Scott Underwood Invitational indoor track and field meet on the campus of South Dakota State on Monday.

VanMeeteren won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, and was second in the 400-meter dash. Rick won the pole vault and the triple jump. Milbank’s Emmett Hanson topped the field in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

On the girls’ side, Deuel’s Makia Moe won the pole vault.

Christian runners had a big day as well.

“Boys surprised me a bit with a solid early season 4X100. That was fun,” said Knights coach Sam Bjorkman. “Really good hundred from Brooks (Jett), and solid performances from Daniel Opdahl and Eben Wurgler, all running either PRs or indoor PRs in the 100.”

Jett also finished fifth in the triple jump.

Shawnteah LaCroix led the girls’ squad with a seventh-place finish in the 100, her only event on the day.

“Girls ran well with some good early season 4X1 and 4X2 times,” Bjorkman said. “We had already planned to run those without Shawnteah, but it was good we did, because she is dealing with a little hamstring issue, and only ran the 100 today and had to be done.”

While the Knights got some things accomplished on the day, Bjorkman said that was not the real story of the meet.

“The best part of the day was the team connecting and building each other up and doing the things that lead to success,” Bjorkman said. “Preparing well, focusing, and focusing on inputs and not results.”
