RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central got just one match in Saturday before raining wiped out nearly the entire Rapid City Invitational tennis tournament.

The Golden Eagles were scheduled to play three doubles matches before the singles portion of the tourney, but managed to get just one of those matches in.

The tandem of Dawson Pederson and Mason Ligon ended up falling to a squad from Rapid City Stevens 10-8 in the championship match at flight two doubles.

“They just battled. They didn’t have their ‘A’ game. (Friday) night was their ‘A’ game,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz. “It was awesome to watch (Friday) night. It’s tough to play that well back-to-back times.”

Kurtz said serving was a bit of an issue in the finals.

“They played well, they didn’t serve well,” Kurtz said. “We just lived on our second serves. It’s tough to hold serve a lot against good doubles teams like Stevens.”

While the Central team struggled to hold serve, they stayed in the match because of its ability to break serve.

“We broke serve a lot. We were down the whole match. … Played well and had chances down the stretch,” Kurtz said, “but they just battled … They’re playing well right now. It’s good to see.”

Central plays against Mitchell and Sioux Falls Washington on Monday, which has already been moved indoors because of the weather forecast. The Golden Eagles will stay in Sioux Falls, where they will face Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Sioux Falls Jefferson on Tuesday.

Second Flight

DAWSON PEDERSON-MASON LIGON: lost to Nelson-Mueller, Rapid City Stevens, 10-8. SECOND PLACE.
