PIERRE – Aberdeen Central track and field athletes won three individual events and the Golden Eagles finished eighth in team points in both divisions during the Legion Relays on Friday.

Taryn Hermansen won the shot put on the girls’ side, while Carter Lust won the 100-meter dash and Kyson Fayant won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles on the boys’ side.

Hermansen, who broke the school record in the shot last week, had another strong showing in the event, throwing 44-feet 2-inches.

“Taryn does what Taryn does over there. … Her expectations and her goals are lofty,” said Central girls’ coach Jim Appl. He said that the junior is “always working on new things to try to improve.”

Mya Arampatzis finished second in the 100-meter hurdles and seventh in the 300-meter hurdles.

“The hurdlers all shaved time today. … That’s kind of what we’re aiming to do right now,” Appl said.

Gracie Rife ended up fourth in the 200-meter dash, despite drawing lane one as a starting assignment.

“It’s always hard to run out of that hard tight curve out of lane one,” Appl said.

The Golden Eagles also received places from Jaidyn Forsyth and Breckan Santjer in the pole vault, and Lucy Fritz in the high jump, and the 400-meter relay squad finished fifth.

The Central boys also had a solid day.

“We had some good things happen today,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley. “I thought Carson Urlacher ran well in the 1,600 and 3,200 today. Carter Lust had a good day winning the 100 and running solid legs of the medley and 4X1.”

Fayant had a busy day, not only winning the 300 hurdles, but also taking fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles, and running a leg on Central’s second-place 1,600-meter relay team.

“Kyson Fayant is such a hard worker and continues to knock down his 300 hurdles time,” Murley said, “and ran a great second leg of our 4X4.”

The Golden Eagles placed fourth in the 400-meter relay. Members included Eli Biegler, Fayant, Brendan Phillips, and Colby Dauwen.

“Our 4X4 took a chunk of time off today,” Murley said. “They always provide a great ending to our meet. They are four guys that’ll leave it all on the track.”

Central will have some junior varsity athletes competing at the Rob Luecke meet in Groton on Tuesday and at the O’Gorman Invitational on Friday. The varsity will participate in the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on Friday and Saturday in Sioux Falls.

“Weather was great as was the competiton,” Murley said of the Pierre meet. “We look forward to making improvements in preparation for O’Gorman and Howard Wood.”
