SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central won all 18 of its matches in tennis action on Tuesday.

The Golden Eagles swept past Sioux Falls Jefferson and Sioux Falls Washington by identical 9-0 totals.

“It was really a good day,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz. “Anytime you can beat a Sioux Falls school it’s always good.”

While the Golden Eagles shut out Jefferson, there were definitely some close matches at the top of the singles lineup.

“We started with Jefferson. Boy they’re a good team,” Kurtz said. “They got their 1-2-3 all back from last year and we had losses to them last year in both our dual and at state tournament some matches. To come out and get those all those was a really good win for us.”

Dawson Pederson had the closest match, win the opening set 6-1, dropping the second set 0-6, and then prevailing in a super tiebreaker at flight three singles.

Kurtz said a key was Pederson’s ability to stay positive throughout the second set.

“He was never really down on himself,” Kurtz said. “Credit to him for kind of staying upbeat.”

Pederson then dominated the super breaker.

“He played almost a perfect tiebreaker,” Kurtz said. “He played unbelievable in the tiebreak. It was fun to watch.”

Central’s AJ Prehn also had a battle at top flight singles.

“AJ had a great match at one singles,” Kurtz said. “Him and that kid have had some battles in the last couple years.”

Prehn led 4-3 in the opening set, lost two deuce points, won a deuce point to stay in the set and eventually won the opening set in a tiebreaker on the way to a straight set victory.

“He played really well. He had to kind of change up his game a little bit, had to be a little more aggressive,” Kurtz said. “The (Jefferson) kid is really consistent, so he had to come in a little more than he normally does. He’s got that capability. He does it in doubles all the time.”

Central’s Mason Ligon also had a battle at flight two singles. He won about 90-second deuce point in the middle of the set which fueled his victory.

“Mason won that,” Kurtz said, “and that kind of helped propel him to the finish line.”

The Golden Eagles dominated Roosevelt not losing more than three games in any set.

Central hosts Milbank on Monday, before hosting Pierre and Aberdeen Roncalli on Tuesday.
