HURON – Aberdeen Central athletes had memorable performances during the Huron Invitational track and field meet on Friday.

Among the numerous solid showings was a more than 54-foot throw by Joran Foss in the boys’ shot put.

“He had a really good day,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley. “He’s been throwing really well.”

Murley said that Foss has refined his technique and it showed.

“He’s been spinning and getting better and better,” Murley said. “It’s a little bit of a timing thing and when it clicks, you kind of go, and today was the day it kind of clicked for him.”

Central also won the 400-meter and 800-meter relay races.

“I thought Carter Lust had a really good day for us, anchoring both of those,” Murley said.

The Golden Eagles dominated the relay races, also winning the 3,200-meter relay.

“Eston Foss ran with three kids that don’t run a lot of 800s,” Murley said, “and we ran a pretty a good time.”

Central also received big performances by Kyson Fayant who won both the 110-meter high hurdles, and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

“Kyson Fayant won the 110s and he won the 300s going away. … That’s a kid who’s done good things since the fall to get ready for this season,” Murley said.

The Golden Eagles capped off the meet by winning the 1,600-meter relay as well, anchored by Colby Dauwen.

“Pretty happy with the way we ended the meet,” Murley said.

He also noted how the members of the team responded to each other throughout the day.

“Happy with the kids,” Murley said. “Happy with the way they encourage each other, and take care of each other.”

The Central girls also left their mark on the meet.

Freshman Espynn Kuhfeld placed in three events on the day.

“The Kuhfeld girl is really starting to come around,” said Central girls’ coach Jim Appl. “She placed in three events, the 300 hurdles, the high hurdles and the high jump, so that’s really good.”

It was business as usual for Taryn Hermansen, who won the shot put.

“Taryn Hermansen lit ’em up in the shot put. … It was just a solid performance again by her,” Appl said. “We expect that out of her.”

The Golden Eagles also went one and two in the pole vault, with Breckan Santjer winning the event followed by teammate Jaidyn Forsyth.

Appl also pointed out the performances of his middle distance and distance runners.

“Distance kids I thought performed quite well today,” Appl said. “We’re really competing hard. Our 400 through our mile. I thought the kids competed pretty hard.”

Appl said numerous athletes recorded personal records on the day.

“It was a good chance for us to get out there,” Appl said. “It’s prom weekend, so the girls have really nice nails. We had the nicest nails at the track meet today.”

Central now takes a break before heading to Mitchell to compete at the Corn Palace Relays on Thursday.

“It was a good start to the season to have the whole team outdoors,” Appl said. “The kids competed hard and we’re picking up at a good spot. I’m excited to see what we do the next two weeks.”
