WATERTOWN – Aberdeen Roncalli split a pair of tennis matches on Monday, blanking Sioux Falls Roosevelt 9-0 before dropping a 7-2 decision to Watertown.

The Cavaliers won a variety of close matches to keep the Rough Riders off the board.

“Ben Goebel raced out of the gates and then left the door open in the second set,” said Roncalli coach Jason Haskell of the fourth flight singles player. “His opponent pushed him to a tiebreaker in set two and then Ben owned the tiebreaker for a commanding 7-1 victory.”

No match was closer than at flight two doubles where Ezra Feickert and Goebel ended up splitting sets before eventually prevailing 15-13 in a super tiebreaker.

“We also got some younger kids on the court today, which was great,” Haskell said. “It’s always fun to see the younger kids get some match play.”

The Cavaliers held their own despite falling to host Watertown.

Feickert found himself in another tight battle, this time at flight two singles.

“Ezra Feickert bore down in his singles match to eke out an 8-6 tiebreak win,” Haskell said. “It was very hard fought and Ezra really had to focus to pull it out.”

Gannon May pushed his opponent to the limit before falling 10-8 at top flight singles.

“Gannon May locked horns with a very feisty players at number one singles. Ran out to an early lead and then had a long back and forth battle and came up just a little short,” Haskell said. “He played some of his best tennis early in that match.”

Roncalli’s other win against the Arrows came at top flight doubles where May and Will Haskell secured a victory.

“(May) and Will Haskell collectively, played the best doubles I’ve seen them play yet this year,” Coach Haskell said. “They controlled the points and commanded the court and cruised to a 10-5 win.”

The Cavaliers are right back in action today when they travel to Huron to take on both Milbank and Huron.

“Should be another great day to swing a racket,” Coach Haskell said.
