PIERRE – Aberdeen Roncalli fell in a pair of hard-fought tennis duals Thursday and is now gearing up for a tournament today in Pierre.

The Cavaliers dropped an 8-1 decision to Rapid City Christian and then came up short against Pierre 6-3.

“It was a tough battle against Rapid City Christian,” said Roncalli coach Jason Haskell. “Lots of good points and good tennis. We just couldn’t seem to find a way to win the points that mattered.”

Roncalli’s lone win against the Rapid City squad came at second flight singles, where Ezra Feickert scored a 10-4 victory.

The Cavaliers then had a couple of intense matches against Pierre, most notably at top flight doubles where Gannon May and Will Haskell teamed up for a 7-5 tiebreaker-victory.

“Will and Gannon had an epic battle at number one doubles. Pierre jumped out to a lead at 5-4. Then it was great rally after great rally as they leapfrogged each other until the tiebreaker,” Coach Haskell said. “That was where we were able to create just enough space to grab the victory.”

May also won his top flight singles match and Liam Voehl pulled off a 10-8 win at flight six singles.

“Gannon had a very solid win at number one singles,” Coach Haskell said. “Liam at number six singles had a hard-fought victory to grab our third team victory against Pierre.”

The Cavaliers will compete in the Governor Invitational tourney today.
