YANKTON – The Aberdeen Smittys played from behind in one game and owned a lead in the other, but both ended with the same result in a doubleheader sweep by Yankton on Wednesday afternoon.

The hosts controlled the opener 9-4, before rallying for a 7-4 win in the second contest.

Yankton pulled away from a 1-1 tie in the first game with eight unanswered runs.

The Smittys threatened to score in the top of the first when Lance Siefken doubled with two outs and the next batter was hit by a pitch, however, both runners were stranded.

After Yankton scored in the bottom of the first, Aberdeen tied the score in the second when Karson Borge singled, stole second, and scored on a ground out.

The hosts then scored three times in the second, added single runs in the third and fourth, and tacked on three more runs in the sixth to take command.

The Smittys scored three two-out runs in the seventh to close the gap, but it wasn’t enough.

Borge singled again, stole a base, moved up on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch, before Ridley Waldo and Jehiel Aviles both had run-scoring singles.

Aberdeen owned a 4-0 lead early in the second game.

Borge and Aviles had singles in the second inning and each came around to score, Borge on an error and Aviles on a sac fly by Grant Beyer.

Jaxon Ladner’s two-run double in the third pushed the margin to four runs.

However, like the first game, Yankton responded in a big way, this time plating seven unanswered runs to finish off the sweep. Gavin Johnson had two hits in both games. Easton Feser finished with two doubles and triple in the two contests.

The Smittys are back in action today when they play at Harrisburg Gold.
