JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Aberdeen Central’s Maggie Fites established a new school record on the bars Tuesday night during the Tri-State meet in Jamestown.

Fites recorded a score of 9.4 to break the mark of 9.3 set by Adrianna Skaggs in 2005.

“That got us motivated for floor where the girls performed beautifully, even with some music issues,” said Central coach Mickey Everson. “We finished on beam with a fall by most of them, but still managed a score I was not expecting.”

The Golden Eagles finished in second place behind Jamestown.

“I had no idea what Whapeton-Breckenridge looked like, and from the routines I caught, I was honestly unsure of how we would fall,” Everson said. “It was a pleasant surprise to land in second.”

Fites, who was second in the floor exercise, finished third in the all-around. Ashlyn Beyer, who was fourth in vault and fourth on beam, was eighth in all-around.

Central had one of its gymnasts suffer an ankle injury in warmups, but Everson said the younger girls competed well.

“The girls enjoy this meet every year as it’s very laid back and doesn’t feel like a meet,” she said. “My younger girls said it felt like camp, so that made it a little less intense for their nerves. I’m very happy with their level of competition.”

The Eagles head to Mitchell for another meet on Saturday.
