SIOUX FALLS – The Aberdeen Cougar girls’ hockey team wrapped up their seventh consecutive league championship with a 4-2 victory over the Sioux Falls Flyers on Saturday.

“I do not even have words to describe how proud I am of this team,” said Cougars Coach Shelby Edwards. “They have worked hard all year to stay at the top and continue to amaze me as they get better and better every weekend. We are peaking at exactly the right time.”

Kaitlyn Holland recorded a hat trick in the victory, scoring once in each period. Kailyn Poppen had the other goal for the Cougars.

Danielle Podoll assisted on two of Aberdeen’s four goals.

The Cougars will wrap up their regular season today at Odde Ice Center when they host Brookings at 3:15 p.m. A win will clinch an undefeated season and will be the final home game for a decorated group of seniors.

“Sunday is the last home game for six of our players and I hope we are able to send them out as the undefeated league champions that they deserve,” Edwards said. “I believe it would be hard to find a class that has won seven straight league championships and 5 of 6 state championship appearances. They are something special.”
