Mitchell came in on a hot streak, and Tuesday’s contest against Aberdeen Central did little to quench the Kernels, as they pulled away in the middle going of a 43-27 Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ basketball victory over the Golden Eagles.
The win gave the Kernels their eighth straight victory, and they did it by both shutting off Central’s inside presence and hitting from the outside at Golden Eagles Arena.
Nearly half of Mitchell’s attempts from the floor came from three-point range, where the Kernels were 6 of 24. While that computes to just 25 percent, the makes came at critical moments for the visiting squad, helping create distance on the scoreboard.
Central, meanwhile, struggled to find a rhythm in the paint despite having a bit of a size advantage. Mitchell was stingy on the defensive end, forcing Central into 25 total turnovers.
“We talked a lot about execution,” said Central coach Mikayla Arechigo. “As you can see with 25 turnovers to their 11, we definitely didn’t execute. A lot of that has to do with not understanding the passes we need to be able to execute and not making adjustments.”

Central eighth-grader Taryn Hermansen finished with nine points and nine rebounds in the game, tops for the Golden Eagles. Kiana Mounga, Central’s senior center, had six points and four boards.
Mitchell was led by Lauren Van Overshelde, who was 4-for-9 from three-point range and finished with a game-best 14 points. Sawyer Stoebner had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Kernels.
Central, 2-13 on the season, will now turn its attention to Huron Friday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Huron Arena.
“We’ve gone through what we need to do,” Arechigo said. “It’s really on them to execute it and to bring the work ethic and hustle and attitude that we need to practice, and just be able to come together as a team for our next game.”
