It was a memorable night at the Roncalli Gym on Tuesday.

Madelyn Bragg poured in a career-high 31 points, Roncalli coach Derek Larson won his 200th game and the top-rated Cavaliers celebrated Parents Night with a 52-38 victory over Florence-Henry in a non-conference girls’ basketball game.

“I do think this is probably the most compete we’ve played from first quarter to fourth quarter,” Larson said. “We did a really good job to start the game, just coming out with energy, doing a good job of getting the ball inside, taking shots that were within the offense. I didn’t think we forced anything.”

A big factor in the opening half when the Cavaliers were building a lead was rebounding. Roncalli grabbed 10 offensive rebounds in the first 16 minutes and finished with 14 on the evening.

That was a point of emphasis heading into the contest.

“We went into this game knowing that they were super aggressive and that we had to get every single board possible because they’re really good in transition,” Bragg said. “So if we were to let them get boards they would just take it out and run with it. So we knew that we had to box out and each get our own. We had to show up today.”

Roncalli got good position inside and made the most of its opportunities with eight second-chance points in the first half alone.

The Cavaliers were also patient on offense and consistently worked the ball inside to Bragg who was dominant in the lane all night.

“We moved the ball really well. In past games we’ve settled a lot and just taken bad shots,” Bragg said. “Today we went into it with a different mindset. We knew that we had to move the ball to get people open and that that was going to be the way we won this game.”

Roncalli was able to string quality possessions together all game so once they opened a double-digit lead in the second quarter it was tough for the Falcons to mount a comeback.

Florence-Henry battled the entire way, but could get no closer than nine points until the final two minutes of the contest.

Again, Bragg was a big part of the efficient Roncalli offense, even nailing a three-pointer on Roncalli’s final possession to put an exclamation point on the victory.

“I thought we did a good job of moving the ball and looking for her maybe more than we have, just not settling for shots,” Larson said. “That was probably one of the keys to tonight is really getting the shot that we wanted consecutive possessions coming down the floor.”

The Falcons never had an answer for the 6-foot-2 center in the paint, trying a variety of ways to stop her.

“I had one of my girls come down and she said ‘What am I supposed to do?’ Caylin Kelly was fronting her and (Carlie) Moe jumped up as high as she could in the back. They had her sandwiched. She got the ball turned and made a layup over the top,” said Florence-Henry coach Rob Carpenter. “I said, ‘I don’t know what to tell you.’ Thats kind of rough. I usually have an answer for my kids and I didn’t have an answer when she asked the question, because I don’t know what you do.”

Kelly was a force of her own for the Falcons. The sophomore finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

“I was a little nervous just because she is so young and she has so much talent,” Bragg said. “I just knew that I had to stay on the ground. I couldn’t fall for her shot fakes and that I couldn’t swat. I just had to play good defense.”

Morgan Fiedler added nine points for the Cavaliers and initiated the offense from her point-guard position.

Roncalli improved to 18-1 with the win and gave Larson his milestone coaching victory.

When asked what 200 wins meant to him, Larson responded, “That means you’ve had a lot of really good kids. We’ve had a tremendous amount of athletes come through in my 12 years here. I don’t take a lot of credit for that. I give a lot credit to the kids, and the assistant coaches I’ve had have just been remarkable in my tenure at the school.”

The Cavaliers take on third-rated Aberdeen Christian (17-2) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Aberdeen Civic Arena. The boys’ game will follow.

“I think it will be a really good game,” Bragg said. “We’re planning on pressuring really hard, not letting them get open looks at all.”
