The Aberdeen Roncalli football team has a new home.

Starting in the fall, the Cavaliers will play their home games at Dacotah Bank Stadium on the campus of Northern State.

Roncalli played one game there last season.

“It was a really exciting experience for our kids,” said Roncalli football coach and assistant athletic director Billy Young. “We’ve been kicking the idea around of what would it maybe take to move our home games over there.”

Northern and Roncalli recently finalized the details and the Cavaliers will now play their home games there instead of Swisher Field, a venue it shared with Aberdeen Central and also with Northern before the new stadium opened last fall.

“As far football, the field is still the same dimensions, so I don’t expect it to have a huge impact as far as game play,” Young said. “I think just the experience of getting to play in a state of the art facility like that, not too many high school kids get that opportunity. For us, it’s just a chance for our kids to try something a little different.”

Young said he appreciates the years of working with Aberdeen Central and being allowed to use Swisher Field.

“We still very much value our relationship with Aberdeen Central. We’re grateful for them for all these years allowing us to play our games at Swisher and always being easy to work with, so we definitely appreciate that,” Young said.

As for the new arraignment, Young said next year’s schedule hasn’t been released, yet. The only potential issue could be Gypsy Day weekend.

“They asked us to talk to the state and see if we could not have a home game that week,” Young said. “The state has indicated to me that they would do everything they could to try to work with us there.”

Young said that there has been a good working relationship with the university.

“Northern was really very easy to work with and seemed to be excited for us to come over there,” he said, “so we’re looking forward to having this relationship with those guys.”

While Young is excited about playing at Dacotah Bank Stadium, he totally understands the Cavaliers have had an excellent venue for years.

“Let’s be honest, we’ve had the privilege of playing in a really good stadium. It’s not like we’re leaving a bad stadium. We’ve been really fortunate, because Swisher is a very nice facility,” Young said. “It’s just something different. It kind of gives our kids their own identity. It’s something that I think they’ll appreciate.”

Young said it’s exciting to see how the plan has come together and the end result.

“A lot of hours were put into it and making sure it was the right thing for us, and Northern, it was the right thing for them,” Young said. “I think Northern seems to be really excited to have us be over there. “

While the stadium will feature the maroon and gold of the Wolves, Young said it gives the Cavaliers a special opportunity to play their games in a premier venue.

“It’s a way for our kids to kind of have their own identity,” he said. “Even thought its not our stadium, it still seems special. We’re the only high school team that can call that their home field. I think our kids are going to be pumped.”
