Class A girls’ basketball has been the most balanced of any of the divisions this year with multiple teams receiving first-place votes right through the final polls of the season.

That should lead to some intense battles as the post season gets under way this week.

Hamlin out of Region 2A was runner-up in last year’s state tournament.

A new champion will be crowned this year after Aberdeen Roncalli dropped down to Class B.

Here is a capsule look at the two regions in the area.

Region 1A

Tuesday and Thursday at highest seeds

Florence-Henry and Sisseton should be the favorites to make the SoDak 16 out of this region. Both played tough schedules and faced each other in the final game of the regular season just a few days ago with Sisseton earning a hard-fought victory.

After those two top seeds, things get a bit murky.

Groton is the only other team with a winning record. Redfield, Webster and Milbank Area all finished with 9-11 records and have proven to be dangerous foes on a given night.

Region 2A

Tuesday and Thursday at highest seeds

Things could get a bit interesting in this region before everything is settled.

There are four teams which all have a shot of moving on. Hamlin is the top seed, Flandreau the second seed, Deubrook Area the third seed and Sioux Valley a solid fourth seed at 14-6.

Hamlin is highly motivated to get back to the state tournament after finishing runner-up a year ago. The Chargers enter the post season with a 16-game winning streak, including a 26-point win over potential semifinal opponent Sioux Valley.

Flandreau, which lost to Hamlin by a single point during the season, should be favored against Deubrook Area in a potential semifinal matchup, having defeated the Dolphins by 32 earlier in the season. However, any team that won 15 games during the regular season should not be taken lightly.
