RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central put forth a dominating performance on the final day of the West River Invitational tennis event in Rapid City on Saturday. The Golden Eagles swept both Rapid City Central and St. Thomas More by 9-0 scores.
The Eagles did not surrender more than two games in any set on the day.
“It was a good performance by our kids. They didn’t mess around out there,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz. “They were focused and played extremely well and did what they should have done. It was a nice little confidence builder for our guys winning every match today.”
Kurtz said the thing he noticed about his team’s final matches of the three-day event was an improvement in serving.
“I thought our serving was by far better today than it was the first two days,” he said. “Hopefully, that’s an improvement that will keep getting better and better.”
The Eagles will now get a week-long break before returning to action. Kurtz said the time will be helpful to work on things that need to be shored up, and will also allow the squad to get in some challenge matches to solidify its lineup.
The squad returns to action on Tuesday, April 5 in a triangular with Harrisburg and Sioux Falls Christian, before another triangular two days later against Sioux Falls Lincoln and Watertown.
While Kurtz doesn’t put too much emphasis on his team’s 3-2 record to start the season, he is pleased with what he witnessed this past weekend.
“I’m really optimistic from what I saw. First off, we’ve got a lot of really good kids. They were a fun group to be around for three days, so it’s going to be a fun year for me coaching. Any time you have good, hard working kids it just makes your life a lot better,” Kurtz said. “So I’m excited to be around this group of guys for the whole year, but there’s a lot of good just on the tennis side. I think we’re further along than I thought we were, so I’m excited to try to see where we can be at the end of the year.”
