A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of March 27-April 2:

Last year on April 2, 2021: In their first home games since May 4, 2019, the Northern State baseball team swept Winona State scoring a combined 18 runs on 26 hits. Spencer Sarringar led the way for NSU with four hits on the day with four RBIs, a triple, two doubles and two stolen bases while teammate Reece Ragatz also had four hits including two doubles and scoring four runs. The two wins also were the 299th and 300th of coach Dean Berry’s career.

10 years ago on March 27, 2012: The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department has sold 18,917 annual resident fishing licenses compared to 7,867 in 2011, thanks to an unseasonably warm spring.

20 years ago on March 30, 2002: Northern State track and field athletes Steve Gough (160 feet, six inches) and LeAnne Ehrich (145-5) each set a school record in the hammer throw at a meet in Kearney, NE.

30 years ago on March 31, 1992: The Class B All-State basketball team included Eric Lappe of champion Harrold and Chris Rozell of runner-up Warner. Earning second team honors were Travis Akin of Northwestern and Chuck Welke of Warner while third-team members included Ted Quinn of Highmore, Carlin Clown of Dupree and Ryan Melius of Faulkton.

40 years ago on March 30, 1982: Coach Curt Fredrickson and his women’s indoor track team finished a successful indoor season led by freshman Lisa Voegeli of Ellendale. She set school records in the mile, two-mile and 3,000-meter runs while also helping the Wolves two-mile relay team set a school record.

50 years ago on April 2, 1972: Iowa State has started spring football drills and coach Johnny Majors says he is building his team’s offense around an Aberdeen Central graduate. Majors said he plans to use spring practices to move tailback George Amundson to the Cyclones’ starting quarterback.
