A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 3-9:
Last year on April 6, 2021: Doland native and former Northern State assistant Tim Miles is the new head men’s basketball coach at San Jose State University. Miles is 399-334 in 24 years as a head coach at Nebraska, Colorado State, North Dakota State, Southwest Minnesota State and Mayville State. He spent six seasons as an NSU assistant under Bob Olson, helping lead the Wolves into two NAIA national championship games. Miles has been a TV analyst since being fired at Nebraska in 2019. San Jose hasn’t had a winning season for the last 10 years, and has failed to get to 10 wins in nine of those 10 seasons.
10 years ago on April 3, 2012: South Dakota pro cowboy Chuck Schmidt of Keldron had a birthday week to remember. Schmidt, who turned 24 on March 28, won the saddle bronc riding championship at a rodeo in Atlantic City, N.J., on March 31. The night before on March 30, he won another bronc title at a rodeo 1,460 miles away in Fargo. The two wins jumped Schmidt from 48th to 23rd in the world standings.
20 years ago on April 5-7, 2002: Hundreds of bowlers have descended upon Aberdeen for the opening weekend of the South Dakota Women’s State Bowling Tournament that ran through May 5 at the Village Bowl. Among the highlights of opening weekend was the induction of Loretta Koch of Aberdeen and Laurie Clark of Sioux Falls into the hall of fame.
30 years ago on April 9, 1992: Northern State and its newly merged Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference will enter NCAA Division II membership on July 1, 1995.
40 years ago on April 3, 1982: Bruce Mogan and Allan Linde of champion Mobridge led the all-Central Conference boys’ basketball team.
