A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 17-23:

Last year on April 17, 2021: The Corn Palace Relays, a spring track tradition for Mitchell and South Dakota for more than seven decades, was held for the first time in four years. In 2018 and 2019, mid-April snowstorms canceled the meet followed by Covid-19 in 2020. On April 18, 1947, the first Corn Palace Relays were held with organizer and Mitchell track coach Joe Quintal reporting about 50 high schools and colleges from the Dakotas, Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota taking part.

10 years ago on April 17, 2012: Stanley County held a signing day for senior classmates Jake Etzkorn, Tate Cowan, Chantry Norman and Jamie Wolf at its high school in Fort Pierre. All were signing national letters of intent to do rodeo in college.

20 years ago on April 17, 2002: One of the leaders of the state women’s bowling tournament in Aberdeen is Debby Slusser of Rapid City. Slusser learned to bowl at the Village Bowl in Aberdeen starting at age 4 as she grew up in Aberdeen.

30 years ago on April 20, 1992: Randy Jordan will be the new boys’ basketball coach at Aberdeen Roncalli. He spent last season as a graduate assistant for the Northern State men’s program.

40 years ago on April 19, 1982: Several colleges said they will join in when the North Central Conference begins to sponsor women sports starting in the fall of 1983: Augustana, South Dakota, South Dakota State, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Nebraska-Omaha and Mankato State.

50 years ago on April 23, 1972: Two Aberdeen Central girls set school records at a home track meet. Myra Scholten ran the 880-yard run in 2:30.8 and Sheila Weismantel threw the discus 99 feet, 1.5 inches.
