PIERRE – Aberdeen Roncalli split a pair of tennis duals on Thursday and gained a measure of revenge in the process.

The Cavaliers defeated Spearfish 6-2 and lost to Pierre 8-1.

Roncalli coach JD Carrels pointed out several matches in particular against Spearfish.

“The boys came out firing on all cyclinders as we started with doubles. They played more aggressive and got to the net, which allowed them to all get wins,” Carrels said. “Our number one doubles (Daniel Gamboa and Mason Carrels) lost to Spearfish last weekend in Rapid City, so it was great to see them make adjustments from then.”

Cason Hellwig also reversed his fortunes at flight two singles from a week ago when he lost to that same opponent.

Coach Carrels also pointed out the play of Landon Zikmund at flight five singles.

“Landon Zikmund played one of his best matches he’s played all season,” Carrels said. “He served well and was hitting all his spots.”

The Cavaliers found the going much tougher against a solid Pierre squad. The Governors frustrated Roncalli with their style of play.

“The one shot all the Pierre players were good at was the slice,” Coach Carrels said. “I’ve never seen a team hit slice so often and our guys struggled with it.”

Roncalli was able to get a win at flight three singles where Mason Carrels held off his foe for a 10-7 triumph.

“He got off to an early lead and then his opponent calmed down and made a run of his own,” Coach Carrels said. “As it got down to the final few games, Mason was able to win more of the crucial points and that was the difference.”

The Cavaliers will compete in a single and doubles tournament in Pierre today.
