The number one tennis team in the state flexed its muscle at the Holgate Courts Friday afternoon.
Sioux Falls Lincoln did not drop a set on the way to a 9-0 victory over Aberdeen Central in the Golden Eagles home finale.
One day after avenging its only loss of the season to Sioux Falls Washington, Lincoln was in control of every flight against Central.
The Patriots have won the last seven consecutive state team championships.
“They’re really good. They just beat Washington 6-3 (Thursday night) so that kind of tells you, until somebody knocks them off they’re the champs,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz. “They’re really good. I thought we played really well in different spots.”
The matches were closer than the final scores might have indicated.
“I thought Gabe (Goetz) played really well in his singles match,” Kurtz said of the top flight singles contest. “I know he turned to me after he lost a tight deuce one and he said he was one of four on deuce points, so I mean he was playing well.”
Kurtz also noted the competitive match involving his second flight doubles team of Mitchell Hofer and AJ Prehn.
“I thought two doubles played really well. They had a 40-30 lead there at 2-3,” Kurtz said. “You know you win of those next two points and get to 3-3 and maybe make them sweat, get them tight a little bit.”
Instead, the closest match of the day came at flight three singles where Hofer dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision.
Kurtz said playing against Lincoln is difficult, because there is very little margin for error.
“It’s just so difficult, because you have to play so well for so many points. We had so many games that we win against 95 percent of the teams in the state and instead we’re playing a deuce point to try to win the game,” Kurtz said. “You play four or five really good points and it’s not good enough, where it is against most teams.”
Central has a big day ahead today at the Huron Quadrangular where the Eagles will face Brookings, Huron and Yankton. Precious seed points will be at stake during Central’s three matches leading up to the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament on Tuesday in Huron.
“We have a lot of guys that are around that .500 mark in the conference, so a 3-0 day (Saturday) pushes them from 3-3 to 6-3 and they go from a 4 or 5 seed to a 2 or 3 seed, so a huge day (Saturday),” Kurtz said. “We need to pick up a couple of wins in every flight and if some of those flights can go 3-0, that would be a big help.”
