MADISON – Aberdeen Roncalli’s Grace Seyer tied for fourth place during the Madison Invitational golf tournament on Thursday.
Sioux Valley won the team title with a total of 388. Roncalli was fifth with 425.
“To be at Madison today, this was the big meet,” said Roncalli coach Kerry Brandenburger, noting that 60 golfers participated in the event. “Some of the best golfers in Class A were there. Grace played fantastic.”
Just an eighth-grader, Seyer finished with a career-low 92.
Brandenburger said the key to her round was staying out of trouble.
“She said she didn’t get into the sand,” Brandenburger said. “That was her biggest thing.”
Brandenburger said the team didn’t really have any expectations on the day, other than learning the course where the region will be played in a couple of weeks.
“It was just about getting to learn the course, and the ins and outs of that,” Brandenburger said, “and what club to pull when.”
What the Cavaliers and other northeast golfers found out is that the course is a major challenge.
Brandenburger said area coaches felt the course was maybe even tougher than Moccasin Creek Country Club in Aberdeen.
“We feel that this course is maybe even a little harder than Moccasin,” Bradenburger said. “It has water, it has a lot of sand, it has a lot of trees, it’s got everything. It’s a long course. It’s a big course. It has hills on it.”
The only other local golfer to finish in the top 15 was Sisseton eighth-grader Elliot Hortness who tied for ninth.
The Cavaliers will host the Northeast Conference tournament on Monday at Moccasin.
“That will be fun,” Brandenburger said. “We have some expectations on that one.”
