RAPID CITY – The Aberdeen Roncalli flight three doubles team of Landon Zikmund and Gannon May finished off the season on a high note at the State A tennis tournament on Tuesday.

The duo won the consolation championship with a dominant victory over a squad from St. Thomas More.

Zikmund and May lost a heartbreaker in the opening round on Monday, 7-5, 7-6, but regrouped and won a pair of matches to finish ninth at the tourney.

“Landon and Gannon played great. They didn’t have a lot of time to play together this season as Gannon was out for a month with a back injury after the first match,” said Roncalli coach JD Carrels. “But over the last couple of weeks of playing together they started to feed off each other’s styles and find a good ryhthm.”

The Cavaliers fell in each of the other matches during the second day of action.

Palmer Johnson at flight four singles and Zikmund at flight five singles both lost to foes from Sioux Falls Christian and ended up taking sixth place at the state tourney.

Both of Roncalli’s top doubles squads also dropped matches that fed into fifth place matches.

“Overall, the team played well especially with having to deal with one of the wildest tournament days I’ve been a part of,” Carrels said. “We started outdoors, moved indoors, moved back outdoors, moved back indoors, then moved back outdoors again and were finally able to finish the tournament.”

Yankton won the team title. Roncalli finished eighth.

“A goal at the beginning of the season was to get this year added up on the banner in the gym and we accomplished that goal by getting eighth as a team,” Carrels said. “I’m very proud of everything this team accomplished this year and I can’t wait to see what the returning players have in store for next season.”

The Cavaliers lose two members, senior Mason Carrels, and foreign exchange student Daniel Gamboa.

“These two played vital roles in every match we played this season,” Coach Carrels said, “and I know they will be missed next year.”
