A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of May 22-28:

Last year on May 28, 2021: Two seventh-graders stunned state track fans by winning the state track and field titles in their first years in their respective sports. Ipswich’s Marley Guthmiller won the State B pole vault title and Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal won the State A high jump. Coming into the state meet, Guthmiller was the 14 th seed with a personal best of 7 feet, 9 inches — the opening height of the state meet. Guthmiller cleared 9-6 to win the event. Her vault helped Ipswich repeat as the combined state champions (boys’ and girls’ team points added together). Koupal high jumped a two-inch personal best of 5-4 to win the State A event. Next year, she will begin trying to chase down the school record of 5-8 held by her aunt and one of the state’s best all-time high school and college basketball players, Mandy Koupal.

10 years ago on May 25, 2012: Texas Tech junior Kim Kaufman of Clark finished tied for eighth in the NCAA Division I championships.

20 years ago on May 25, 2002: Tony Schwan led the Aberdeen Central boys to its first state track championship since 1950. The Class AA MVP won the 100 and 200 meters and anchored the Golden Eagles winning 400-meter (Dustin Kono, Jon Ford and Cody Axlund) and 800-meter (Dustin Griese, Mitch Grieben and Cody Axlund) relay teams.

30 years ago on May 22, 1992: Pine Ridge girls’ basketball coach Charles Zimiga is retiring due to health reasons. His Thorpes went 120-24 in the last five seasons, including winning the 1989 State A title, a team led by SuAnne Big Crow. Pine Ridge boys’ coach, John Jordan, will coach both the boys and the girls next season.

40 years ago on May 22, 1982: Coach Jim Egeberg and his Groton boys’ track team used great performances in the field events to win the State A track championship. The Tigers scored 31 points to outdistance Custer and Salem, which tied for second with 21 points each. Top three performances for Groton were turned in by Philip Adler (second in shot put), Rob Gravatt (first in high jump), Jeff Kersting (second in high jump, second in long jump and second in triple jump), and Sam Goehring (third in 200).

50 years ago on May 25-26, 1972: The Northern State baseball team came up short in its bid to earn a berth in the NAIA World Series at the Area III Tournament in Enid, OK. Eventual tourney champion Oklahoma Christian College nipped Wolves 3-1 in the tourney and the Wolves were eventually eliminated by Wayne State in the semifinals.
