LENNOX – The Aberdeen Smittys were back at it with another dominating win at the Dakota Classic on Saturday.
One day after a pair of lopsided victories, the Smittys picked up a 13-1 American Legion baseball victory over Crookston. Aberdeen has outscored its first three opponents in the tourney by a combined margin of 38-3.
“It felt good to take another one today,” said Smittys coach Brandon Kusler. “Offenisvely, we started a little slow, but the second time through our order we started hitting some balls hard and finding some holes.”
Jaiden Smith had a monster day, finishing with four hits (including a pair of doubles), knocking in three runs, and striking out seven batters in less than four innings as a starting pitcher.
“I’m really proud of Jaiden Smith and the way he competed on the mound for us,” Kusler said. “We needed a big start from him and he did excellent.”
After falling behind 1-0, the Smittys took control with six runs in the third inning and seven more in the fourth.
Casey Vining had a two-run double before Josh Steinwandt drove in a run with a double to highlight the third inning. Smith, who started off the fourth by stealing home, later produced a two-run double in the frame.
Vining and Steinwandt each finished with two hits in the victory. Vining also drove in a pair.
The Smittys, who improved to 16-11 on the season, take on the Lincoln North Stars at 1 this afternoon. Aberdeen could also potentially play at 5 p.m.
“We’re hoping we can keep things rolling into (Sunday) against a good Lincoln North Star team,” Kusler said. “We’re going to have to come ready to play and minimize our mistakes.”
