Minnesota teenager wins Rumble title

He may have been the youngest driver on the track, but he executed a veteran move that allowed him to grab the biggest win of his racing career.

Bryce Sward of Nelson, Minn. performed a slide on a restart to grab a lead on the way to winning the $10,000 Dacotah Bank Insurance Rumble title at Brown County Speedway Saturday night. The 18-year-old Late Model driver knew he was running out of time before a restart with 19 laps remaining in the 50-lap event opened the door.

One the green flag dropped, Sward slid under race leader Ryan Mikkelson of Alexandria, Minn., for a lead he never lost.

“I kind of knew that’s what I had to do. I knew he was going to check out if I wouldn’t have thrown a slider,” Sward said. “I just kind of threw it in there and hoped I could get by him and kind of keep going after that, and it worked.”

Sward was in third place behind Mikkelson and Watertown’s Scott Ward before a caution stopped the race. He said he probably wouldn’t have caught either man without the restart.

“This track was so fast. I don’t think I would have gotten around Scott and then try to track Mikkelson down, I don’t think I would have been able to,” Sward said. “That caution kind of played in our favor right there.”

And when opportunity presented itself, Sward was ready.

“I knew that was kind of my only hope,” he said, “and I took it and I got it.”

Sward said the victory was the biggest of his young racing career and he had no idea how he was going to spend his winnings.

“That is unreal,” Sward said. “I don’t think it’s even sunk in, yet.”

Ward finished second and Mikkelson third.

Earlier in the night, Shane Edginton of East St. Paul, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada won his second Structural Builders WISSOTA Challenge series race in as many nights, each worth $3,000.

Edginton led for the majority of the race, lost the lead, then rallied on the final lap to edge Mikkelson for the victory.

“It was really tricky to stay on that bottom,” Edginton said. “He got stuck in lap traffic there and just made one wrong move and I was able to capitalize. I was right there and it all worked out in the end.”

Jade Hastings of Grand Forks, N.D., won the Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprint Cars feature, leading from start to finish after starting on the front row alongside Thomas Kennedy of Winnipeg.

“It’s never easy start next to Thomas there on the front row,” Hastings said. “To be honest, I thought it was a 50-50 shot, whoever got into one first was probably going to win it.”

Hastings won that sprint to the corner, took the lead and then navigated lap traffic to perfection to grab the checkered flag and the $2,000 purse.

“I was really good in traffic tonight. I think that’s some of the best traffic driving I’ve ever done,” Hastings said. “My brain just shut off and I didn’t think. I just did it. I felt really good. The car was really fast.”

The 24-year-old driver said his racing experience seems to be paying off.

“As you get older your eyes adjust and everything starts to slow down and I think that’s finally what’s starting to happen to me,” Hastings said. “There’s cars all over the place. You can’t think about it. You just have to stand down and go.”

Billie Christ of Jamestown, N.D., won the Street Stock feature, gaining a measure of a revenge, after finishing runner-up to his son, Jaden the past two features at the local track.

Billie trailed early, but then grabbed the lead and was able to stay in front. Jaden ended up third.

“It definitely sat wrong in a guy’s stomach there for a while, but it’s good,” Billie said of finishing second to Jaden in back-to-back features. “If we can get 1-2 finishes, as long as somebody’s winning or we’re making good efforts at it, we’re real proud.”

Billie is trying to help Jaden with his racing program while remaining competitive himself at the same time.

“We’re just getting him better day by day,” Bille said, “and I’m trying to hang in there, too.”

Racing continues at 7 p.m. Friday.
