A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Aug. 7-13:

Last year on Aug. 11, 2021: The sport of pickleball continues to gain ground in Aberdeen. The city has opened three courts at Manor Park in a $203,000 project. Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines the elements of tennis, table tennis and badminton.

10 years ago on Aug. 10, 2012: Dale Ames of Huron won the WISSOTA Modified feature at Miller Speedway. It is only the fourth time Modifieds have raced at the track. Lorin Johnson of Miller, who won the last time Modifieds raced there on July 4, 1988, finished sixth.

20 years ago on Aug. 7, 2002: Caylee Hertel, 9, of Westport finished fifth in the shot put in her division at the AAU Junior Olympic national meet in Knoxville, TN.

30 years ago on Aug. 8, 1992: The Aberdeen Park and Rec youth coaches of the year were Troy Goehring and Lisa Osman.

40 years ago on Aug. 7, 1982: NSU baseball coach Bart Berndt announced four new recruits for next season: Shaun Wanner of Eureka; Wayne Schmidt of Hoven; Jerry Hartley of Clark; and John Mehlbrech of Salem. Mehlbrech is the fourth brother in his family to attend NSU.

50 years ago on Aug. 10, 1972: Playing from sunrise to sunset, 21-year-old Lorie Kjergaard of Irene played 10 rounds of golf at his nine-hole home course, the Glenridge Country Club. He averaged 45 strokes per rounds, played with eight different partners and walked all 90 holes of golf that day.
