PIERRE – The Aberdeen Roncalli girls’ tennis team dropped two matches on the opening day of the West River Invite Friday in Pierre. The Cavaliers fell 9-0 to Rapid City Stevens and 8-1 to St. Thomas More.

River Haskell came up with Roncalli’s lone win of the day, defeating Katelyn Denholm of St. Thomas More at third flight singles.

“River played one of her best matches ever to secure our only victory of the day,” said Roncalli coach Jason Haskell.

Despite the disparity on the scoreboard in that second match, the Cavaliers fell victim to the close call in a couple matches. Katherine Kretchman battled to a 10-6 score at number two singles, while Raley Haskell claimed five games in a 10-5 loss at fourth flight singles.

Kretchman and River Haskell also put up a fight at second flight doubles but fell 10-5 in that match.

“There was some good tennis played by a lot of the girls,” Coach Haskell said. “The younger girls continue to improve. I’m looking forward to the next two to three years of Roncalli tennis. We’ll take some lumps this year, but the future looks bright.”

Roncalli will close out the weekend with a match against Rapid City Christian today.
