MADISON – Aberdeen Central may have taken different routes, but still ended up with identical results in a pair of tennis duals on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles defeated both Vermillion and Madison by scores of 7-2.
“It was nice to see some flashes from some individual players,” said Central coach John Vogel, “and then just overall supporting each other a little bit better than we’ve done.”
Vogel said his players were a bit flat-footed against a stubborn Vermillion squad before competing better against Madisoin.
Vogel said the Vermillion squad is comprised mainly of sophomores and seventh-graders.
“They just keep getting better and better every year we play them, and that will continue to be the case,” Vogel said. “They’re a little feisty club.”
Vogel said one of the highlights on the day was the return to form of Laney Gonsor. She won both of her singles matches at flight five as well as the two doubles matches she was involved in at flight three.
“It was good to see Laney Gonsor bounce back from kind of a rough weekend,” Vogel said. “She didn’t have her best day Saturday in Huron. Today I thought she played kind of a little bit more like the Laney Gonsor of old.”
Vogel also pointed out the play of Carly Comstock who won both of her flight three singles matches, and flight two doubles matches.
After six weeks of playing on the road to start the season, the Eagles will have their first match at home Monday, hosting St. Thomas More. That will start a busy week of tennis as Central will then host Rapid City Central and Rapid City Stevens the following Friday before the Elliott Extravaganza the next day.
“We have way more home now than away,” Vogel said of upcoming matches. “It will be nice to play some tennis in Aberdeen for a change.”
