
A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 2-8:
Last year on Oct. 5, 2021: The Northwestern volleyball team gave coach Nora Groft her 600th career win (vs. 75 losses). All total as a head coach, assistant and player, Groft has helped Northwestern to 12 state titles, 16 state championship matches and 19 state appearances.
10 years ago on Oct. 5, 2012: Terry Dosch of Aberdeen Roncalli became the 14th high school football coach in South Dakota history to win 200 career games.
20 years ago on Oct. 4, 2002: Long-time University of South Dakota track coach Dan Lennon died in Mesa, AZ. The 95-year-old Vermillion native was the USD track coach from 1949-75. Lennon, a 1935 USD graduate, was an all-North Central Conference guard in football.
30 years ago on Oct. 8, 1992: The Roncalli football team is doing it all this season. The Cavaliers went to 6-0 on the year after a 20-0 win over Webster. It was Roncalli’s fifth shutout of the season. Known for its potent passing attack, the Cavs passed for only 23 yards against the Bearcats but rushed for 173. The winners were led by Jeremy Bendewald’s 103 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
40 years ago on Oct. 2, 1982: Groton native Bob Ehrke was inducted into the SDSU Hall of Fame. He was a two-time all-conference basketball player who led the Jacks in scoring and rebounding in 1952-53 and 1953-54. He also was one of the Jacks’ top baseball pitchers as he had a 0.49 earned run average in the 1954 season.
50 years ago on Oct. 2, 1972: The Northern State women’s field hockey team defeated Augustana 6-0 in Sioux Falls. The Wolves got goals from Connie Mason (3), Linda Reinhart (2) and Barb Felderman (1).
