A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 16-22:
Last year on Oct. 16, 2021: Even though two of South Dakota 11 college football teams are winless, the South Dakota teams are having their best season as a whole ever this deep in the season. Seven of the teams have winning records and SDSU and Augie only have one loss each while NSU, Sioux Falls and USD have only two losses each. So far, the 11 state college football teams have a record of 42-38.
10 years ago on Oct. 20, 2012: With 37 seconds left, the NSU football team went on a six-play, 64-yard drive that ended on a 34-yard TD pass from Jared Jacobson to Mark Hanley to tie the game. With no time left, Felipe Alfaia kicked the game-winning PAT to give NSU a 28-27 win over St. Cloud — the Wolves first win over the Huskies in 65 years.
20 years ago on Oct. 16, 2002: Former USD standout Jamel White has been named as one the Cleveland Browns’ captains for this season.
30 years ago on Oct. 22, 1992: Sterne Akin rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns and Justin Heissinger rushed for 124 yards and one TD to lead Aberdeen Central over Rapid City Central 26-22. Lee Eckmann added two interceptions for the Golden Eagles.
40 years ago on Oct. 16, 1982: Cozy Bearsheart, Louise Linde and Steph Ford combined to scored 42 points to lead Mobridge past Aberdeen Roncalli 49-35. The Mobridge girls are now 7-2. The Cav basketball team was led by Jane Heintzman with 12 points.
50 years ago on Oct. 22, 1972: World champion Oakland defeated Cincinnati 9-5 to win Game 7 of the 69 th World Series. Many South Dakotans were interested in the series as Reds’ manager Sparky Anderson is from Bridgewater and two members of the Oakland coaching staff (Wes Stock and Vern Hoscheid) were former Aberdeen Pheasants.
