Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 23-29:

Last year on Oct. 23, 2021: Seven eighth graders finished in the top eight places in the State B girls’ cross country championship race in Sioux Falls, including winner Ella Boekelheide of Northwestern. Second was Kimball/White Lake eighth-grader Autumn Baker followed by Arlington eighth-grader Kaelyn Ulschmid and Freeman Academy junior Jada Koerner. The other eighth-graders finished fifth (Autumn Fallis of Highmore-Harrold), sixth (Madisyn Gellhaus of Ipswich) and seventh (Danika Kaup of Potter County). Another eighth-grader, Ellie Maddox of Sioux Falls Christian, won the State A girls’ title in her first season in cross country.

10 years ago on Oct. 28, 2012: SDSU athletic teams did their part to make the 100th Hobo Day weekend successful: women’s soccer defeated Nebraska-Omaha 6-1; football defeated Youngstown State 41-28; volleyball defeated Fort Wayne 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 26-24, 26-28 and 15-11); men’s cross country won the Summit League championship; and women’s basketball defeated Minnesota-Crookston 86-43 in an exhibition.

20 years ago on Oct. 26, 2002: For the second year in a row, the South Dakota Rushmores won the National Adult Baseball Association Over-50 National Tournament in Las Vegas. With players from across the state including former Aberdonian Bob Beattie, the South Dakotans defeated teams from Texas, New Hampshire, Maryland, New England and Colorado.

30 years ago on Oct. 29, 1992: Jeremy Bendewald and Brian Fritz each scored a touchdown to lead Aberdeen Roncalli to a 14-6 Class 11B playoff win over Deuel.

40 years ago on Oct. 23, 1982: On Oct. 23, Nebraska senior Kevin Seibel of Vermillion kicked three field goals and two extra points to give the Cornhuskers a 23-19 win over Missouri. On the same day, Kevin’s brother and USD kicker Kurt Seibel kicked a PAT and two FGs (including the game-winner with 3:32 left) to give the Coyotes a 13-10 win over Morningside. Another Seibel brother that day, Kent Seibel, booted the game-winning FG with 3:28 left to give Augustana a 13-10 win over SDSU. Finally, another brother,
Vermillion senior Kyle Seibel, kicked three PATS in the Tanagers’ 21-8 win over Canton that day. As far as we know, seventh-grade brother Karl Seibel did not make any game-winning kicks that day.

50 years ago on Oct. 23, 1972: Gregory football fans got a rare and weird football treat. The SDSU junior varsity played the USD JV team at 7:30 that night in Gregory. After the game, USD sent out a press release across the state saying they had won the game 22-21 on a 24-yard field goal on the final play of the game. A little later, SDSU sent out a release claiming it had won the game 21-19. On the final play, USD was attempting a 19-yard FG which failed, but the Coyotes were called for a penalty. Even though time had expired, USD had been incorrectly given another try, this time from 24 yards which the Coyotes made. After the game, officials realized that they were not supposed to extend the game on an offensive (only a defensive) penalty. By the time, they caught their mistake, victories had already been claimed.
