Region tests await Class B volleyball teams

It’s a special time of the year when for at least one match, everything starts out even. Regular season records and conference titles take a back set to the task at hand as Class B volleyball squads head into regional playoff action.

The immediate goal is to advance to play for another week. Two teams from each region will get an opportunity to do that, while the others will put the uniforms away for another season.

Here is a capsule look at each region in the coverage area:

Region 1B Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, at higher seeds

There is something old and something new in this region.

What’s familiar is that defending State B champion Warner once again sits atop the field as the number one seed. The Monarchs enter the post season with a 13-match winning streak.

Perennial power Northwestern has won 11 in a row and is primed to get back to the state tourney after a year’s absence.

What’s new is that Hitchcock-Tulare has moved into the region this season. The Patriots may be under .500, but closed the regular season strong with the return of standout Katelyn Schroeder from injury.

Thursday’s Matches: Semifinals at highest remaining seeds.

Region 2B Monday, Tuesday, Thursday at Iroquois, Wolsey-Wessington, Castlewood

Things could get real interesting before the dust settles in this region.

Wolsey-Wessington is the top seed and has won 14 of its last 15 matches. The Warbirds are in search of their first trip to the state tourney after falling in the SoDak 16 last year.

Castlewood and Arlington could have tight contest in the other half of the draw. The two split a pair of matches during the regular season.

Wolsey-Wessington 25-4

Castlewood 19-7

Arlington 19-13

Oldham-Ramona-Rutland 17-10

Thursday’s Matches: Semifinals at highest remaining seeds.

Region 6B Monday, Tuesday, Thursday at higher seeds

There isn’t much to separate the top teams in this region.

Herreid-Selby Area is the top seed and won’t face a team with a winning record to advance to the SoDak 16.

Faulkton and Ipswich, which both own wins over HSA during the season, could have quite a battle in the semifinal round should they both advance. Faulkton owns a pair of wins over the Tigers already, but it’s always tough to defeat a quality foe three times in a season.

Team W L

Herreid-Selby Area 19-8

Faulkton 18-11

Ipswich 15-13

Potter County 12-18

Sully Buttes 13-16

Lyman 8-16

Lower Brule 11-13

Highmore-Harrold 9-18

Sunshine Bible 2-23

Monday’s Match: Sunshine Bible at Highmore-Harrold, 7 p.m.

Tuesday’s Matches: Sunshine Bible/Highmore-Harrold winner at Herreid-Selby Area, 7 p.m.; Sully Buttes at Potter County, 7 p.m.; Lower Brule at Faulkton, 7 p.m.; Lyman at Ipswich, 7 p.m.

Thursday’s Matches: Semifinals at highest remaining seeds.
