A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of March 28-April 3:
Last year on April 2, 2020: Andrew Rohrbach of Aberdeen Christian committed to play collegiate basketball at Northern State. The 6-foot guard averaged 18 points and 8.1 rebounds for the Knights, who finished with an 18-2 regular season record and advanced to the State B Tournament that was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
10 years ago on April 3, 2011: The Northern State baseball team defeated Wayne State 7-2 to give Wolves’ coach Dean Berry his 100th career coaching win. Lucas Jung threw a complete game for NSU, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three. (Berry, now in his 11 th season with NSU in 2021, is just a handful of wins from 300 career victories.)
NSU had a pair of three-run innings, the first in the fourth when Jose Figueroa doubled to score Ronnie Sellers and Jack Thompson, who both hit singles to start off the inning. Robbie Rocamora scored the other run on a Zach Miller sacrifice fly.
NSU tacked on three more runs in the seventh inning when Thompson singled to drive in Michael Cross, who had tripled before that. Rocamora later singled to bring in Thompson and Figueroa later singled to bring in Sellers.
20 years ago on April 3, 2001: The Aberdeen Central girls’ golf squad started practice March 12 in hopes of getting in its April 10 opener at the Pierre Invitational.
However, bad weather has kept the three Aberdeen golf courses closed. Thus, the 24 Golden Eagle golfers, led by senior Chelsea Gehring, have been holding practices in strange places such as roofs, big and small gymnasiums, weight rooms and classrooms.
In his fourth season, Central girls’ golf coach Kim Zimmerman said he has been trying to keep the practices interesting and practical. Right now, the Golden Eagles are practicing indoors at Holgate Junior High, using mats and netting. The team also has been lifting weights and watching videos on mechanical tips and rules.
30 years ago on April 2, 1991: Aberdeen golfer Joe Siegel got his first hole-in-one in 28 years of playing the sport. He used a six-iron to ace the 163-yard, par 3 eighth hole at the Aberdeen Country Club.
40 years ago on April 1, 1981: The South Dakota Sportswriters Association Class A All-State Boys’ Basketball First Team featured all seniors. It was led by unanimous picks 6-foot-7 Craig Dudley and 6-foot-4 Mike Busch of state champion Huron.
Other first-team selections: Dave Gustafson of Sioux Falls Washington, Jeff West of Yankton, Randy Draine of Sturgis, Doug Van Sloten of Sioux Falls Lincoln, Phil Breidenbach of Mitchell and Scott Novak of Brandon Valley.
Aberdeen Central teammates Jim DesCamps and Kevin Andersh and Brookings teammates Troy Nelson and Dave Shaskey led the second team.
Other members: Troy Schaefer of Pierre, Bryan Barness of Rapid City Central, Mike Pickart of Lennox and Jeff Pederson of Madison.
Jay Hawk of the Flandreau Indian School led the third team along with: Kevin Ratliff of Douglas, Phil Bjorneberg of Washington, Marwin Hofer of Huron, Jay Sohler of Yankton, Brad Dodds of Madison, Jim Mayer of Mitchell, Doug Smith of Pierre and Shawn Friedeman of Watertown.
50 years ago on April 3, 1971: The NAIA District 12 track and field coaches have picked defending champion Dickinson State, Northern State and Jamestown as the favorites to win the district title when it is decided May 8 in Valley City.
The coaches pointed to NSU track stars such as quartermiler Steve Schulte, miler Dean Marsh, distance specialist Loren Kambestad, throwers Ed Nook and Ron Kaaz and pole vaulter Ron Nankivel as reasons to worry about the Wolves.
