A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Nov. 6-12:
Last year on Nov. 6, 2021: Carley Jeffery got a memorable first win as a college women’s basketball head coach. Her Presentation College Saints trailed Mount Marty 50-42 with less than 90 seconds to play. However, PC got a three-pointer from Nek Newell, a defensive stop and two free throws from Kat Kriener to cut the lead to 50-47 with 54 seconds left. Newell got a steal and Kriener tied the game at 50. With 19 seconds left, Jordan Kulczyk got another steal for the Saints, and Newell found Kriener, who made another three at the buzzer for a 53-50 PC win.
10 years ago on Nov. 6, 2012: The Summit volleyball season started its season with a loss to Warner and ended it with a loss to Warner in the Region 1B championship. In between, Summit won all of its 26 other matches.
20 years ago on Nov. 12, 2002: The Redfield volleyball team defeated Milbank 3-1 to win the Region 1A championship. The 33-2 Pheasants were paced by Aubrey Baxter (23 kills), Marissa Schulte (40 assists) and Kayla Boomsma (15 digs).
30 years ago on Nov. 9, 1992: Three of the 15 best saddle bronc riders in the world are from South Dakota. The Etbauer brothers, who grew up in Ree Heights near Miller, have again qualified for the upcoming Pro Rodeo National Finals in Las Vegas. Billy Etbauer (29) finished the regular season as the top rider while brothers Dan (27) finished fifth and Robert (31) 10th . Robert, who is recovering from a knee injury earlier in the season, is the two-time defending world champion.
40 years ago on Nov. 8, 1982: Kevin Quimby led Frederick past Freeman 32-16 in the semifinals of the Class 9AA football playoffs. He ran 22 times for 234 yards and three touchdowns and passed for two more TDs to Jim Selchert and Joey Livermont.
50 years ago on Nov. 12, 1972: Champion Northern State led the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference this season in every statistical category except for passing and individual rushing. The rushing crown went to Redfield native Darwin Robinson of Dakota State with 539 yards while John Brown of NSU was second with 521 yards.
