They found the back of the net another half dozen times, but unlike Saturday, it took a while for the Aberdeen Cougars to get going on Sunday morning.

The girls’ hockey team won for the second straight time over Rushmore, but the most recent 6-4 victory at the Odde Ice Center was a bit different than a 6-0 triumph the day before.

“I thought we were a little sluggish to start and just didn’t play with the same energy this morning as (Saturday),” said Cougars coach Rob Weinmeister. “But it’s early in the season and we need to learn to put solid efforts together on back-to-back days.”

Unlike the first contest, Rushmore jumped in front of the Cougars with a goal early in the opening period. Aberdeen responded with goals from Kailyn Poppen and Aiden Raap, but Rushmore leveled the score at 2-2 by the end of the period.

The Cougars then took control with a barrage of goals late in the second period. After Rapp scored again early in the period, Aberdeen exploded for three goals in 30 seconds later on to open a four-goal advantage.

Allison Woehl had a pair of the goals, and Morgan Jones scored the other.

Rushmore added a pair of goals in the third period for the final margin of difference.

While Sunday’s shots on goal were much closer than Saturday’s when the Cougars dominated that category, Aberdeen still racked up six goals as its balance continues to show early in the season.

“It was good to see the scoring, especially getting two goals from each of the three lines we run,” Weinmeister said. “We have a lot of girls capable of putting the puck in the net.”

The Cougars have now had seven different players score just two games into the season, but Weinmeister said his squad didn’t win as many battles for the puck as they did in its season opener.

“It’s good to see it spread around,” Weinmeister said of the scoring, “but I also like to see us doing the little things that create those opportunities, but aren’t necessarily on the score sheet.”

The Cougars will continue their busy start to open the season with another game this evening when they host Jamestown, N.D., in a non-league contest at 6:35 p.m. at the Odde Ice Center.

“We have our third game in three days against Jamestown,” Weinmeister, “so we’ll have to be ready to play from the drop of the puck.”
