This year’s all-state volleyball teams are loaded with school record holders and accomplished athletes.

There are three area members on the Class B first team, two more on the second team and another on honorable mention, and one member each on the Class A first team and second team.

Here is a capsule look at each of the area players on the honor units, followed by the complete list of all of the all-state players from all three classes.

Ava Nilsson, Warner, setter: This junior has been a cornerstone of Warner’s back-to-back state championship teams. This past season she had 94 kills, 63 aces, 1,167 set assists, 250 digs and 61 blocks. She collected her 4,000th career set assist at the state tournament. “Ava is in charge of our offense and has worked extremely hard to speed up our play,” said Warner coach Kari Jung. “Her positive leadership helps bring out the best in all the athletes around her. Not only is she an experienced setter, she perfected her one-hand attacks this season.”

Ella Haven, Northwestern, outside hitter: This four-year starter capped her career with 1,422 kills, 190 aces, 729 digs and 300 blocks for a team that went 127-16 and won State B championships in 2019 and 2020. She set two school records with 673 kills in a season and 300 career blocks. “She played middle blocker her first two seasons and transitioned to be our go-to six rotation player her junior and senior years, leading the team in every statistical category except assists,” said Northwestern coach Nora Groft.

Wolsey-Wessington’s Mya Boomsma (6) reaches to hit the ball as Burke’s Paige Bull (26) and Emmie Hausmann (18) defend the net during the Class B third place match at the South Dakota State Volleyball Tournament at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls. Mya Boomsma, Wolsey-Wessington, outside hitter: Boomsma finished her career with 1,257 kills, 1,298 digs, 147 aces and 70 blocks. “Mya is the first player in the history of our program to achieve both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career,” said Warbirds coach Lindy Uttecht. “Her positive attitude, leadership skills, and work ethic contributed to the success that she had on the court, along with her willingness to put her team first.”

Addison Melius, Faulkton, outside hitter: This junior had 331 kills, 50 aces, 274 digs and 13 blocks this past season. “Addison was a great asset to our team this season. She led our team in hitting, aces and was one of our top defenders despite not playing in the backrow full time,” said Trojans coach Mallory Schlechter. “Addison is a tough competitor, a great leader, and an even better role model. We are excited to see all that she accomplishes in her senior season.”

Lauren Marcuson, Warner, outside hitter: This junior had 337 kills, 9 aces, 38 set assists, 293 digs and 6 blocks this past season. “Lauren’s mental game has improved so much over the course of this season. She is playing with so much more confidence and it shows,” said Monarchs coach Kari Jung. “She was second in kills for our team. However, her biggest asset was her backrow play. Not only did she lead us statistically in serve receive, she was also second in digs because of her ability to react and run down balls.”

Class B Honorable Mention

Katelyn Schroeder, Hitchcock-Tulare, middle hitter: Schroeder, a sophomore, overcame a foot injury to finish the season with 119 kills, 14 aces, 105 digs and 15 blocks. “Even though she only played in eight matches, she made an instant impact to our lineup, not just hitting and passing, but also made our team better defensively,” said Patriots coach Jordan Opp. “Her knowledge of the game is second to none. She is always thinking about how to make her team better and is so coachable.”

Class A First Team

Tyra Gates, Miller, setter: The Rustlers went 54-17 in two years with Gates as the setter. The senior accumulated more than 2,000 career set assists, 120 kills, 68 aces, 764 digs and 95 blocks. “Tyra’s quickness and agility are her strengths,” said Miller coach Linda DeBoer. “She delivers the ball to a variety of places and tempos to run a dynamic offense. She has a very high volleyball IQ and uses it to get the best hitting option. She is a great teammate who supports and encourages others and who uses her individual goals to enhance the team’s goal of effectiveness and efficiency.”

She was always encouraging, and expected nothing but the best from herself.”
