WATERTOWN – The Aberdeen Central boys’ wrestling squad kicked off its season by winning three duals at the Marv Sherrill Dual Tournament in Watertown on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles defeated Milbank Area 55-21, Yankton 75-3 and Mitchell 70-10. Central’s lone setback came against Tea Area in a 38-30 loss.

“We kind of got that team bonding going,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “We got a lot of other people in the lineup so that they could have a little success. It was a really good day.”

Central had three wrestlers win all four of their matches on the day. Ridley Waldo had a pair of pins among his wins at 120 pounds, Rayden Zens collected three pins while going undefeated at 126, and Jacob Krenz had three pins in his four victories at heavyweight. Mason Schrempp went 3-0 at 145 pounds.

Those individuals are returning veterans for the Golden Eagles.

“Those are all kids that have some varsity experience the last couple of years and I think that helps tremendously, especially at the beginning of the year when they get started,” Bowden said. They kind of understand what it’s going to be like, where they need to be and what those matches are going to feel like.”

On the girls’ side Avery Bendewald and Katrina Gibson both went undefeated for the Golden Eagles.

Central has a busy week ahead, heading to the Black Hills where they have duals against Rapid City Central and Sturgis on Thursday and then compete in a tournament Friday and Saturday featuring 48 teams from four different states.

“This is the biggest one we go to,” Bowden said of the Rapid City Invitational. “I love this one. This is a great weekend.”
