WATERTOWN – The Aberdeen Cougars used three third-period goals to pull away from the Watertown Lakers on the way to a 6-3 boys’ hockey victory Tuesday night.

“It was a great team effort,” said Cougars coach Jeremey Backous. “I thought the kids battled the entire game.”

After each team scored in the opening period, a key sequence took place in the second period.

“We killed off a 5-on-3 penalty in the second period and scored shortly after,” Backous said. “It was a huge momentum swing for us.”

Devon Fischbach, who scored in the first period, had both of Aberdeen’s goals in the second period.

After Watertown put together back-to-back goals to tie the score at 3-3, the Cougars secured the victory with the final three goals of the contest coming from Lance Siefken, Jaxon Danielson and Brady Huff.

Fischbach had three goals and an assist to help power the win.

“Devon Fischbach had a great game, scoring a hat trick,” Backous said. “Colton Townsend had a strong night in the net.”

Townsend finished with 13 saves.

The victory will send the Cougars into the break on a positive note after dropping a pair of contests over the weekend at Sioux Center.

“I’m proud of the way the team responded after a tough weekend in Sioux Center,” Backous said.
