A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 1-6:

Last year on Jan. 1, 2022: Webster native Brock Lesnar, 44, won the ninth professional world wrestling championship of his career. Lesnar made his pro wrestling debut in 2002.

10 years ago on Jan. 4, 2013: In the first 144 seconds of a college women’s basketball game in Aberdeen, Crossroads College (Rochester, Minn.) did not advance the ball beyond the halfcourt line, called two timeouts and fell behind 11-0. Presentation College won 124-31.

20 years ago on Jan. 6, 2003: Redfield nipped Ipswich 47-43 in girls’ basketball. The Pheasants got 14 points from Jordan Schaffer while the Tigers got 16 points from Lyndsey Hoffman.

30 years ago on Jan. 3, 1993: The NSU men’s basketball team blasted Jamestown 91-65 to open the season 13-0. The Wolves made 14 three-pointers, four each from Chad Boekelheide and Eric Kline.

40 years ago on Jan. 6, 1983: The NSU women’s basketball team crushed Briar Cliff 102-63 in the Jackrabbit Classic in Brookings. The 8-0 Wolves were led by Deb Esche and Cathy Coyle who combined for 36 points. The next night, NSU ripped the Jacks 86-57 thanks to a combined 47 points from Ronda Moe, Coyle and Lisa Card.

50 years ago on Jan. 6, 1973: The snowmobile racing season opened at Apache Speedway in Redfield with 70 drivers competing in 13 divisions. Dean Linguist of Aberdeen won four divisions.
