BRANDON – It was a tale of two duals for the Aberdeen Central boys’ wrestling squad Thursday night.
The Golden Eagles fell to powerhouse Brandon Valley 45-27 and rolled past Yankton 75-6 in a pair of Eastern South Dakota Conference matchups.
“It was two completely different duals,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “It was good to be in a dog fight and there was some confidence on the other end.”
Central grabbed five individual wins against Brandon Valley and fell just short in a couple of others that would have split the 14 matches evenly.
“All in all I thought that we had some pretty good effort. To be able to take those five matches that we did against Brandon Valley and then have a shot at a couple others to split with them, it shows us where we’re at,” Bowden said. “We know that we still have to improve and those improvements are coming, so it’s pretty exciting on that end. Obviously, we’d like to win way more than we lose, but it’s nice to kind of see where you’re at and use them as a measuring stick, and know that you’re doing the right things in some areas.”
Rayden Zens, Elias Biegler, Cole Dunlavy, Samson Flakus and Bryce Beitelspacher each went 2-0 on the night for Central.
The Golden Eagles girls’ wrestlers defeated Brandon Valley 36-18 and Yankton 36-12 in duals that featured a variety of forfeits.
Bowden said the girls are getting better each time out.
“We continue to get more and more competitive on that end,” he said, “because it’s just experience on that side.”
The Central girls compete in a tournament in Harrisburg today, while the Central boys will be at the Harrisburg Dual Tournament on Saturday.
“I think we just continue to grow from one contest to the next,” Bowden said following Thursday’s action. “This kind of just solidified some things that we’re doing right, and showed some more flaws that we need to fix.”
