Central splits four duals at East-West tourney

PIERRE – Aberdeen Central experienced mixed results at the East-West Dual Tournament Saturday in Pierre. The Golden Eagles defeated Rapid City Central 69-6, before falling to Sturgis 42-16 and Rapid City Stevens 41-25, and concluded the day with a 70-3 win over Spearfish.

“It started out with Central where we kind of widened the gap against them,” said Golden Eagles coach Donnie Bowden. “We won a few more matches than we did the first time around against them.”

He pointed out solid victories from Porter Lozenski and Sam Flakus in the dual. Flakus defeated an opponent who finished third at state last season.

“Then we ran into the beast that is Sturgis. The score makes it look lopsided, but we competed really hard,” Bowden said. “That is just such a balanced and strong team. They have a really nice dual team. They have really tough kids.”

Bowden said the Eagles competed hard, but were unable to win some of the close matches.

“We didn’t win as many matches as we thought we could,” Bowden said. “We had some tight ones there with some opportunities, but we felt pretty good about the way we competed.”

Central then came up short against Stevens.

“That was one that we were hoping to get the win with,” Bowden said. “It was close, and we had opportunities to do it, we just ultimately gave up too many bonus points in that one. It comes to the bonus-point game and we got on the backside.”

The Eagles finished on a high note by dominating Spearfish.

“We kind of left the gym feeling pretty good about ourselves,” Bowden said.

He said the dual tourney gave the Eagles another chance to see some of the state’s best wrestlers from the western part of the state.

“It’s good to see those teams from out west, because they compete hard,” Bowden said. “They just have hard-nosed kids.”

Central heads to Watertown on Thursday for duals against Harrisburg and Watertown. The Eagles will host the annual Lee Wolf Tournament on Saturday at Golden Eagles Arena. Action starts at 9:30 a.m.
