MOBRIDGE – Mobridge-Pollock outscored Aberdeen Roncalli 11-2 in the final seven minutes to extend its girls’ basketball winning streak Monday night.
The Tigers won their sixth straight contest with a 58-47 non-conference decision to improve to 8-3 on the season.
The setback comes on the heels of an impressive road victory for the Cavaliers last Friday night.
“We’re just not very consistent right now,” said Roncalli coach Derek Larson. “We told the kids at halftime, we have to be more consistent on both ends of the floor.”
The Cavaliers got off to a solid start and led 18-11 after the opening quarter. Six different players scored for Roncalli in the first eight minutes.
The Tigers stayed within striking distance and eventually took their first lead of the contest 37-34 on Mariah Goehring’s three-pointer in the middle of the third quarter. Goehring produced 11 points in the period as Mobridge-Pollock took a three-point advantage into the fourth quarter.
The host squad led 47-45 before pulling away to secure the win. Charley Thompson scored five straight points to give the Tigers a bit of breathing room and the Cavaliers were unable to get over the hump.
“Offensively, I felt like we just turned it over a bunch,” Larson said.
He said many of the turnovers were of the unforced-error variety.
“We just threw the ball all over the place and didn’t value the basketball,” Larson said.
The Tigers heated up from the perimeter, making six threes in the second half, but Larson said it all started with the Mobridge-Pollock getting into the lane.
“They definitely shot the ball much better in the second half,” Larson said. “A lot of that was because we had to help on the dribble drive. We maybe overhelped and then we gave up a three.”
Goehring led the Tigers with 21 points, Blake Thompson followed with 10, and Henderson added nine. It marked the sixth time this season that Mobridge-Pollock scored at least 58 points in a game, and just the third that Roncalli has allowed that many in a contest.
“We can’t give up 58 points and expected to win games,” Larson said. “We have to keep teams in the 40s if we expect to win and didn’t do that tonight defensively.”
Camyn Bain and Ava Hanson each scored nine points for the Cavaliers, Maddie Huber added eight, and McKenna O’Keefe finished with seven.
Roncalli, 7-6 on the season, hosts Milbank Area on Thursday at Roncalli Gym. Larson said the Bulldogs, who have won eight of their last nine games, have a group of players who have been starting for multiple seasons.
“They’re definitely much improved,” Larson said. “You knew that was coming, them being so young the last couple of years, and now some of those same kids have been starting for three or four years.”
