BRANDON and SIOUX FALLS – The Aberdeen Roncalli tennis team got its season underway against a pair of quality foes on Monday.

The Cavaliers were blanked 9-0 by both Brandon Valley and O’Gorman in conditions they haven’t experienced so far this year. Roncalli played outdoors for the first time and in temperatures much warmer than it has been locally this spring.

“It was tough playing in the heat today,” said Roncalli coach Paige Hermanson. “It was good to get our first match in this morning against Brandon Valley. We were hoping to play more competitively, but I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the team being it was our first time outside in a space larger than one court.”

While the Cavaliers were not able to win any matches, they were able to win three games in a pair of doubles matches against Brandon Valley.

Perennial power O’Gorman gave up just four games total on the way to its victory over Roncalli.

Hermanson said the heat was less than ideal, but said the opponents would have been tough to deal with regardless of the weather.

“It was tough pre-season conditions against two very tough teams,” Hermanson said, “no matter when we would have played them.”

The Cavaliers are right back at it today when they travel to Brookings to face both Mitchell and Brookings.

“I’m hoping (Tuesday) we can see scores improve a bit,” Hermanson said.
