A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 16-22:

Last year on April 20, 2022: Former Aberdeen player Nathan Smith scored his first NHL goal, but his Arizona Coyotes’ lost 4-3 to Chicago. He is the first former Wings player to score an NHL goal.

10 years ago on April 22, 2013: Presentation College was accepted into the NAIA, dropping its NCAA Division III status. Also, a new NAIA conference was formed: the North Star Athletic Association, which included South Dakota schools Dakota State and Presentation College.

20 years ago on April 19, 2003: Augustana’s Sandy Jerstad became only the second softball coach in NCAA history to reach 1,000 wins. In her 27th season with the Vikings, Jerstad teams have gone 1,000-404-2 after Augie defeated Mankato 2-1.

30 years ago on April 18, 1993: Holly Sivesind of Sioux Falls Roosevelt was named South Dakotan Miss Basketball. Four future NSU teammates were among the eight finalists: Shari Carney of Hamlin; Toni Schmidt of Miller; Rachel Dick of Marion; and Chris Swanhorst of Northwestern.

40 years ago on April 22, 1983: Several cooperatives in extra-curricular activities between schools were approved at a South Dakota High School Activities Association meeting in Aberdeen. Approvals included co-ops for nine-man football for Roscoe-Hosmer, Bowdle-Java and Timber Lake-Isabel among others. Also, Aberdeen Roncalli students will get the chance to participate in gymnastics and orchestra thanks to a merger agreement with Aberdeen Central.

50 years ago on April 21, 1973: Herreid won the Class B boys’ division of the 15th annual Watoma Relays in Watertown while Redfield won the girls’ division (combined A and B teams). The Herreid boys won three relays: 440 and mile (Roger Huber, Jesse Quaschnick, Ernie Weisbeck and Jim Weisbeck for both) and the 880 (Huber, the Weisbecks and Ken Berndt). Lavonne Opitz of Redfield won the long jump and 220-yard dash as well as anchoring on the Pheasants’ winning 440-yard relay team (Cindy Hansen, Gwen Zens and Diane Strande). Pat Meisen of Redfield won the 880-yard run and the Pheasants also won the mile (Darlys Olson, Dana Sporer, Kathy Jungwirth and Kelly Miller) and medley (Diane Opitz, Hansen, Olson and Miller) relays.
