WATERTOWN – Aberdeen Roncalli fell in a pair of tennis duals on Monday. The Cavaliers were blanked by Watertown 9-0 and were edged by Sioux Falls Roosevelt 5-4.
Roncalli had its chances against Roosevelt. The Cavaliers came up just short in three tiebreakers.
“Roosevelt was certainly a tough loss with three matches going into tiebreakers. It’s tough to practice and coach kids through high-tension situations like the tiebreakers,” said Roncalli coach Paige Hermanson. “Nobody wants to be in that situation, and each tiebreaker is unique in its own way. Working through the mental battle of things like playing up 40-0, locking in deuce points, and tiebreakers are some things the guys have on their mind.”
The Cavaliers did win four matches against the Rough Riders, including one that featured a super-tiebreaker as freshman Ezra Feickert pulled off a 6-3, 4-6, (10-3) victory at flight five singles.
“Ezra sure has had a promising start to the season. It’s fun to watch him play,” Hermanson said. “He’s one that I noticed right away plays smarter rather than harder in many instances, and is always eager to learn and improve.”
Jacob Bellefeuille also scored a close victory at flight six singles, grabbing a 6-4, 7-6, (7-5) decision. Gannon May won in straight sets at flight three.
Roncalli’s other win came at flight two doubles where Cason Hellwig and Sawyer Henrich teamed up for a 10-3 victory.
“Despite the challenge matches, I was pleased to see improvements from last week with limited practice due to snow removal efforts,” Hermanson said, “and I think they learned a lot today, too.”
Roncalli has its home opener today when they host Milbank Area 11:30 a.m., and Huron at 4:30 p.m. at the Northern State Courts.
