HARRISBURG – One day after winning close matches, the Aberdeen Central tennis team found itself on the opposite end of tight scores on Tuesday.

The Golden Eagles fell to Harrisburg 9-0 in a dual that featured numerous tight contests, including a pair of super tiebreakers.

“We won a lot of close ones (Monday against Huron), we couldn’t pull them out today,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz. “We couldn’t carry over that momentum to win those breakers and close matches.”

Still, Kurtz was pleased with how his team did against one of the top teams in the state.

“Honestly, you’re going to see an 0-9 score, but I thought we played pretty well,” Kurtz said. “Harrisburg is really good.”

Kurtz believes that Harrisburg and Yankton are among the top teams in the Eastern South Dakota Conference this season. He said his players battled in every match.

“We had a lot of close matches,” Kurtz said. “It gives a lot confidence to some of these guys that they can play with some of the top ESD schools.”

The closest matches came in doubles, where Central lost a pair of super breakers, both at 10-5 at flights one and three.

“It’s been a while since I’ve said that doubles is kind of the strength of our team,” Kurtz said. “We’re playing doubles a lot better than we are singles right now.”

Kurtz can’t his put his finger on the main reason for the difference, but said this year’s players just tend to have a style that fits doubles better.

“We’ve got more guys that are comfortable coming up to the net and volleying,” Kurtz said. “It’s not anything that we’ve been doing different, I don’t think. It’s just the style of our play right now kind of fits doubles more than it does singles.”

That’s just fine with Kurtz, who was known for his doubles play and volleying back when he played competitive tennis.

“It definitely makes me happy, seeing a lot more guys come to the net and win points up there,” Kurtz said. “We have a lot of doubles points where we have both guys at the net this year. We haven’t always had that in years past, so that’s good. That’s how it should be.”
